The Weight You've Been Calling Normal
It's not that you're doing too little, mama. It's that you've been carrying too much, silently, for far too long.
Dear Mama,
There's a kind of weight that never gets set down — not because you won't put it down, but because most of it is invisible, even to you. It's not just the pickups and appointments and permission slips. It's the constant tracking underneath all of it: who needs what, who's running low on socks, who has a project due Thursday, whether you remembered to say yes to that form. It runs in the background of your mind at all hours, whether or not anyone else can see it.
This week, we're calling it what it is: The Weight She Carries.
It has a name — the invisible load — and naming it is the first real step toward setting a piece of it down.
This week's tool: Self-NVC — naming the need beneath the overwhelm
Marshall Rosenberg's Non-Violent Communication gives us four simple steps most people use in conversation with someone else. But it works just as powerfully turned inward, on the exhausted voice running your own mental load.
Here's how it works. Take the heaviest thought circling your mind right now. Maybe it sounds like: "If I don't keep track of everything, it all falls apart."
Now run it through four steps:
Observation — just the facts, no judgment. What's actually happening? ("I'm the only one tracking every appointment, form, and forgotten item in this house.")
Feeling — name what's true underneath, without softening it. ("I feel stretched thin. I feel unseen.")
Need — what is this feeling pointing you toward? ("...because I need some of this weight to be visible to someone else. Because I need rest that isn't interrupted by remembering.")
Request — specific and doable, even if just to yourself. ("Would I be willing to write down three things I'm carrying and hand one of them to someone else this week?")
Try it tonight, mama. Not to eliminate the load — just to see it clearly enough to know what's actually yours to carry, and what isn't.
A question to sit with: What is one piece of the invisible load you've been carrying quietly — and who is one person you could actually hand it to, even just this once?
More on the blog this week: Tuesday we're writing "The Invisible Load: What Single Moms Carry That Nobody Sees," and Thursday we're walking through "Naming Your Needs: An NVC Practice for the Invisible Load" — a deeper dive into this exact tool.
This is one thread pulled from a much bigger tapestry. Inside She Grew Wings, our 8-week coaching program, we go so much deeper than a single practice — you get the full framework, a coach who sees the load you're carrying, and a community that already understands. If naming this weight tonight stirred something in you, that's worth paying attention to.
With so much tenderness for what you're carrying,

P.S. — Naming the load doesn't make it lighter by itself. But it's the first honest step toward finding out what you don't have to carry alone.
